Marine Area Reference
Main sources for marine area statistics were: - Pilot Analysis of Global Ecosystems (PAGE) by the World Resources Institute (WRI)(see: http://www.wri.org/wr2000/coast_page.html). - Spalding, M.D., C. Ravilious and E.P. Green , 2001, World Atlas of Coral Reefs. Prepared at the UNEP World Conservation Monitoring Centre. University of California Press,Berkeley,USA.

Coastline Reference
Coastline length statistics were largely taken from the following sources: -The World Factbook 2004, CIA. http://www.cia.gov/cia/publications/factbook/) - Pilot Analysis of Global Ecosystems (PAGE) by the World Resources Institute (WRI)(see: http://www.wri.org/wr2000/coast_page.html).
Coral Reef Area Reference
Data source: Spalding, M.D., C. Ravilious and E.P. Green , 2001, World Atlas of Coral Reefs. Prepared at the UNEP World Conservation Monitoring Centre. University of California Press,Berkeley,USA. Note: Reef areas have been calculated from the UNEP-WCMC maps. In order to avoid the problems associated with scale and resolution, data were gridded to a 1 square kilometer grid prior to calculation (see: Spalding and Grenfell, 1997. New estimates of global and regional coral reef areas. Coral Reefs 16: 225-230). Although true error terms cannot be calculated, caution should be applied in the use of these statistics for detailed analysis. figures have been rounded to the nearest 100 square kilometers, while for those countries with small areas o coral reefs the terms <100, <50 and <10 km2 have been used in order to provide an approximate estimation. These figures where converted to 100, 50 and 10 km2 respectively in order to allow numerical display in ReefBase.
Mangrove Area Reference
Mangrove Area Data estimates are derived from Pilot Analysis of Global Ecosystems (PAGE) by the World Resources Institute (WRI) (see:http://www.wri.org/wr2000/coast_page.html).
